Chapter 12

"Oh no, he isn't coming down with a cold, is he? I've heard it's going aro..." The moment she recalled what I had just explained to her, she froze. "You don't think..."

"I have to go get him."

"Okay, if I come with?" she asked.

"Sure." I nodded.

I'm not sure how Kimberly basically just became a friend, but I could use one right now. If I had Tina with me, she'd keep me calm.

"What's wrong, Molly?" Buster asked, obviously sensing my distress, he lifted his large head up from his nap.

"Jake's school just called. He's sick."

"Oh dear. I'm coming with you," he insisted.

"Let's go." I waved at him.

We scurried out the door and piled into my SUV, where I opened the sunroof so Buster could stick his head out, which never failed to attract curious and delighted onlookers. Kimberly glanced in the backseat and tried her best not to look horrified at the enormous talking dog with his head poking out the roof and taking up almost the entire backseat. She better get used to bizarre stuff like this now, that's for sure.

I maintained an iron grip on the steering wheel, my eyes darting between the road and the clock on the dashboard. Each minute stretched endlessly as I navigated the familiar streets of Melioras Village. The call from the school nurse replayed in my head like a broken record - Jake was sick, running a fever, complaining of dizziness. What if the curse has gotten to him like it did Zach? My heart clenched with fear as I imagined my vibrant, energetic son reduced to the pale shadow Zach had become.

I tried rationalizing the matter. I told myself it could just be a little cold; Kimberly said a cold bug was going around. But the nagging voice of maternal intuition wouldn't be silenced. As I turned the corner onto the school street, my throat tightened with unshed tears. I silently pleaded - not Jake, please, not my little boy. If it was the curse, it had already wreaked so much havoc in our quiet village I couldn't bear the thought of it claiming Jake. I pulled into the school parking lot, steeling myself for what I might find.

"Molly," Kimberly whispered, her hand gently resting on my arm. "He's going to be okay. I just know it."

I nodded silently, biting my lip. If I opened my mouth to talk, even a little, I'd start crying and never stop. Steeling myself for what I had to face, I took a deep breath and marched into the school.

"Hey, Mom!" Jake said the moment I entered the nurse's office. So, he hadn't collapsed like Zach. I took that as a good sign.

"Hey buddy, how are you feeling?" I asked, pressing my hand to his forehead to check how warm he was.

"I'm not feeling all that bad," he insisted. "Cool, you brought Buster!" he exclaimed as I whirled around to find Buster had followed us into the school. I was so distracted I assumed Kimberly and Buster would wait in the car.
